John Young

Meet Your Tour Guide

John Young was born and raised on a dairy farm in Vermont's "Northeast Kingdom." At the earliest opportunity, he escaped to the state's largest city, Burlington, where he attended the University of Vermont, graduating with a B.S. in secondary education. John and his family fell in love with Charleston, and, due to the lax "Yankee Immigration Laws," have made their home here. John also works as a docent in Charleston's historic Powder Magazine. His other interests include: historic research and writing, murder mysteries, fine food and competitive trivia. He is the author of A Walk in the Parks.

"Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning . . ."

The Lowcountry Gullah culture has a lyrical term for sunrise--Day Clean. And they're right; because everyday is a new beginning, filled with opportunities. We believe it is also the perfect time to see and learn about the timeless city we call home.

Join historian and published author John Young on a walk, and wake up with Charleston as she slowly rouses herself from a dream that now encompasses 340 years. You will see The Old Exchange Building, Rainbow Row, the High Battery, White Point Garden and St. Michael's Church. You will meet a mere handful of the people who shaped the city's history, including Arnoldus Vanderhorst, Thomas Pinckney, General P.G.T. Beauregard, Nathaniel Russell and DuBose Heyward, and you'll hear of the events that shaped them, including the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Great Fires, the 1886 Earthquake and Hurricane Hugo.
